Helping Jacksonville Drivers Get Their Licenses Reinstated

Attorneys restore your ability to drive in Florida

Just because you have been ticketed before doesn’t mean you have to lose your driving privileges. Even if your license has been suspended, we can determine if action can be taken to allow you to drive again. Shafer Law, P.A. in Jacksonville may be able to restore your driving privileges. Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is an agency with complicated rules and procedures. Our attorneys navigate this system and help you understand your options. Even if you have been designated as a habitual traffic offender (HTO), we will work to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

What causes a suspended driving license in Florida?

Florida driving suspensions are the result of traffic offenses or administrative proceedings. Florida law requires that a license be suspended for different periods of time depending on the amount of points on a driver’s license:

  • A suspension of 30 days is required if a driver gets 12 points within 12 months.
  • A 90 day suspension is issued after accruing 18 points in 18 months.
  • If a driver gets 24 points in 36 months, their license will typically be suspended for a year.

Our attorneys help clients who have been accused of traffic violations avoid license suspension. In addition to traffic offenses, your driving privileges can be suspended for failure to pay a traffic ticket, failure to maintain car insurance on your vehicle or even failure to pay child support. In cases where a suspension has already been issued, we seek to get drivers a hardship license.

Understanding “habitual traffic offender” status in Florida

Florida punishes certain drivers by taking away their license for five years and calling them a “habitual traffic offender.” This harsh measure is taken after a driver is convicted three times for driving on a suspended license. With the help of our attorneys, many suspended drivers are able to obtain a hardship license. This can only be used for traveling back and forth from your job and is available after the first year of a “habitual traffic offender” suspension has passed.
